What New Jersey towns charge
One state publishes the price of a patrol car, town by town. 141 New Jersey municipalities set their off-duty police rates by ordinance, and 122 of them put a figure on the vehicle.
Why New Jersey is different
New Jersey is the only state where you can look up what a patrol car costs on a detail, town by town, and the reason is statutory. The Attorney General and the Division of Local Government Services determined that municipal officers may work off duty for private parties — and state law then requires that the assignment be arranged by contract with the municipality, not with the officer. So the town has to set the price, and it sets it in an ordinance that anyone can read.
That single requirement — the contract runs between the employer and the town — is what produces everything below. The town has to name a price, so it passes an ordinance. The money runs through a municipal escrow or trust account rather than from the employer to the officer. And because an ordinance is public, the rate is public.
Almost nowhere else works like this. Miami-Dade publishes rates because the county chose to. Charlotte publishes because it runs a booking platform. New Jersey publishes because the law leaves it no choice.
What the car costs
66 of these towns price the vehicle by the hour, from $5 to $60. 13 price it by the day, from $40 to $200. The rest use a flat charge per job, fold it into an administrative fee, or leave the figure to a resolution.
19 of the 141 ordinances do not put a figure on the vehicle at all. Those towns are in the table with that said plainly rather than left out.
