The American Samoa Department of Public Safety polices the whole territory from its main station at Fagatogo, and is the only law enforcement agency with jurisdiction across all of it. Alongside the police division it runs the territory's Office of Highway Safety and its Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program, whose inspectors are sworn officers who also answer patrol and traffic calls. The department was brought together in 1978 under Public Law 16-29, consolidating the territorial police with the fire service, the correctional facility and the Office of Motor Vehicle.
